Heart Lockets to Wear

by John Hearth

The origins of the "heart shape" have been the subject of a lot of conjecture, especially for those wearing heart lockets. Heart lockets during the Victorian era has mainly been given to those who have recently lost a loved on. The gift has been passed on from generations to generations and in time has evolved to become gifts and keepsakes of a romantic nature. Locket necklaces are commonly heart-shaped, although square lockets and lockets of other shapes and sizes are now widely available. Among all the pieces of jewelry a woman can have, the locket's value is usually on a personal level.

When a young lady is wearing a picture locket, she is generally teased to be hiding the image of a young man within. Wearing a locket with a beloved picture is a very romantic gesture for a young lady as she keeps the image of her boyfriend above her heart literally.

Gold lockets are traditional and have been worn for hundreds of years. They can be pendants on a chain but they can also be seen on rings. More modern lockets are made of sterling silver or metals like platinum or a combination of these metals. Designs have been evolving and there are many lockets with engraved names in them, or some other messages scribed on the back. Silver lockets and platinum lockets also come in various designs.

Most young girls are delighted with gifts of heart lockets, especially those who want their own jewelry collection. Lockets can be worn appropriately with just about any type of dress if it is of the standard size. Young girls like the notion that they are wearing something very feminine and romantic, aside from being very pretty. In addition, they think lockets are perfect as a hiding place for those little secrets they want to keep.

Lockets have been known to be a romantic young girl's friend. It is her personal secret compartment where images of her "crush" can be kept, a loved one's photo, a piece of hair, tiny notes of love, a petal from a wedding bouquet or prom night or whatever else that serves as a reminder of an adventure. The metal case can be precious and contain precious tiny things.

Lockets are precious to young girls as their diaries are precious to them. They are of a very personal nature and wearers think of them as intimate pieces. The hiding compartments can contain images, mementos and even secret codes. Young girls can have many things they want to keep like flower petals from special moments, hair of a pet who recently died, love notes or a picture of a "secret love." Sometimes, the things hidden within are even more precious to the wearer than the metal itself.

Before the advent of photography in the 1800s, gold lockets in the 1600s mainly contain miniature hand-painted portraits. These portraits were painstakingly painted and took a lot of time to finish. They were made to fit inside the lockets. In the Victorian era, the lockets were embellished with various designs including precious gemstones. Lockets rose in popularity when photography made mini portraits easier to produce.

Whatever is kept in locket necklaces worn by women and young ladies will be their secret to keep close to their heart.
