Is It Worth Marketing On Twitter?

by Steven Wilson

A couple of ago, it was tough to dismiss the buzz online about Twitter marketing tools. It was thought that you could use Twitter as an effective means to grow a list of likely purchasers for your products or services. But the question is, were any of those tools that were sold, actually doing you any good? We will talk about Twitter marketing and whether or not it is worth your time and expense as part of your IM campaign.

I was one of those who wanted to find out if getting a large following on Twitter was going to help my product promotion endeavors and so purchased the tools. I joined programs that promised to get me followers on Twitter and bought software tools to help promote my products. In total, I think I bought about 8 software programs to help with my Twitter marketing venture.

I paide for a software package that would automatically follow people for me in an attempt to get them to follow me back. Those who were not following me on Twitter would be automatically taken off my follow list by another software I had paid for. This way I could be following Twitter users who might follow me back. Some of the programs I paid for are not interesting enough to talk about but I will just mention a helpful program that auto-Tweeted any blog posts I made each time they were published. And when I began using all of these tools the results seemed to be impressive because they all did precisely what they said they would do. I was quickly brought down to earth when I went over my spreadsheet and found that I wasn't actually generating any money! I would post to my blog 10 times every day and those blog posts would be shown directly on Twitter just like they are supposed to. Then I discovered a way to have all the blog posts done for me automatically, thinking that the more posts I would have the more folks who would see them.

Okay, here are my results: In three years, I was able to build a Twitter following of moreo r less ten thousand individuals. And although you may think that is great, there's more. In the same 3 year period, my Twitter account collected more than 15,000 blog posts that had links to my affiliate advertisements. And that was the only promoting that I did for that blog, I decided not to even ping the posts to see precisely what Twitter could do for me. Well, you can't say that 3 years isn't long enough to achieve good results but using Twitter I just got 2 - 4 visitors each day to my blog. My affiliate earnings from 2 sales was $47 and to that you can add $8.65 Adsense revenue - pretty dismal all around!

Even with close on 10,000 Twitter followers and using software automation, it seems that this is not enough to pull in money marketing with Twitter. In fact, in the last 3 years I have not even pulled in enough money from that blog to pay for the Twitter programs that I had paid for. Last, I cannot personally recommend using automatic software tools as a good way of promoting on Twitter.
