by Grazina Mazur

Care and nurturing are of the utmost importance when it comes to our planet. It has been taken advantage of for too long and it must be changed in order for its survival as well is that of the human race. It is important for everyone to take a part in a reduction of energy consumption, which is a good start and it can be done in a number of ways. For one, draft proof your home to reduce your energy bills and have a positive impact on the environment.

One has to be extremely thorough in order to do this and no area can be neglected because even a pinhole will cause heat loss. There is no need for any expensive equipment, but the most reliable way to do so is with the use of a candle.

Be sure to inspect the exterior wall electrical outlets. In order to do this correctly, one must remove the plate and fill the area with a foam sealant carefully so that the plate can be replaced flush on the wall. A foam sealant expands, so it is important to learn how to use it properly. Before beginning the task, ensure that you have turned off the main electrical breaker for safety.

Follow the same procedure for the entry doors, garage doors and windows around the frames. If there is any draught, you will have to remove moldings from around them and fill with the appropriate foam sealant.

However, there are other issues with both the doors and windows in order to get the optimum results. For instance, the caulking around the frames on the outside may be old, cracked or come undone. This will require removal of the old and replacement with a new bead ensuring that the coverage is perfect.

The doors may also need added attention in the form of foam or rubber insulation strips. This is a quick and easy task for anyone no matter what their skill level. Simply clean the area and allow to dry. Then remove the backing slowly to expose only bits of the sticky side at a time to ensure perfect adherence.

Caulking or a foam sealant will probably be necessary around the clothes dryer exhaust, among others as well. If all external wall issues are dealt with individually according to the situation and the problem, then the homeowner will ensure a reduction in consumption and in their energy bills.
